Billionaire priest shares No. 1 business rule
IF this 83-year-old billionaire is right, one of the most important lessons of business school is pretty much wrong.
All that stuff about focusing on shareholders? Forget it, says Kazuo Inamori, entrepreneur, management guru and Buddhist priest. Spend your time making staff happy instead. He’s used this philosophy to establish electronics giant Kyocera Corp. more than five decades ago; create the $64-billion phone carrier now known as KDDI Corp.; and rescue Japan Airlines Co. from its 2010 bankruptcy.
From Kyocera’s headquarters, overlooking the hills and temples of the ancient capital of Kyoto, Inamori expresses doubts about western capitalist ways. His views are a reminder that many bastions of Japanese business don’t buy into Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s plans to make companies more devoted to shareholders.
“If you want eggs, take care of the hen,” Inamori said in an interview on October 23. “If you bully or kill the hen, it’s not going to work.”
It’s a view that carries weight because of Inamori’s success. KDDI and Kyocera have a combined market value of about $82 billion. When Inamori was named chief executive of Japan Airlines in 2010, he was 77 and had no experience in the industry. The next year, he returned the carrier to profit and led it out of bankruptcy. In 2012 he relisted it on the Tokyo stock exchange.
Amoeba management
The secret, as Inamori tells it, was to change employees’ mentality. After taking the CEO role without pay, he printed a small book for each staff member on his philosophies, which declared that the company was devoted to their growth. He also explained the social significance of their work and outlined Buddhist-inspired principles for how employees should live, such as being humble and doing the right thing. This made them proud of the airline and ready to work harder for its success, Inamori has said.
The doctrine gained traction, in part because the line between one’s work and personal life is more blurred in Japan than the US. Not all of Inamori’s tactics are so spiritual. His “amoeba management” system split staff into often tiny units that make their own plans and track hourly efficiency using an original accounting system. His turnaround also cut roughly a third of the airline’s work force, about 16,000 people.
“Company leaders should seek to make all their employees happy, both materially and intellectually,” Inamori said. “That’s their purpose. It shouldn’t be to work for
shareholders.”
While that might not impress some investors, the man himself sees no conflict. If the staff is happy, they’ll work better and earnings will improve, he said. Companies shouldn’t be ashamed to make profits if they’re pursued in a way that benefits society, Inamori has said. He’s the second son in a family of seven children and grew up in Kagoshima, the birthplace of Japan’s last samurai rebellion.
Inamori Museum
IF Inamori’s teachings don’t always follow the typical management grad-school script; there’s no shortage of people wanting to learn them. More than 4,500 business owners attended the annual convention of his Seiwajyuku school in Yokohama last quarter. Inamori said he volunteers his time to speak to attendees, as part of philanthropic activities that also include funding the Kyoto Prize, a Japanese version of the Nobel awards. Beside the Kyocera
headquarters in Kyoto stands a five-floor museum dedicated to Inamori’s life and philosophies.
The companies Inamori has led are connected by more than their management approach. Kyocera was the largest shareholder in KDDI as of September 30 with 13.7 percent of voting rights, according to the phone company’s web site. The stake is worth $8.2 billion, almost half of Kyocera’s market value. Kyocera owns 2.1 percent of Japan Airlines, data compiled by Bloomberg show.
Hong Kong-based Oasis Management is calling on the electronic equipment-maker to return cash to investors by selling its stake in the airline and “greatly” reducing holdings of KDDI. Kyocera’s shares have risen 48 percent since Abe’s government took power in 2012, compared with an 84-percent gain for the benchmark Topix index. Return on equity, a measure of the profit companies make from shareholders’ capital, stood at 5.8 percent at the end of September, against an average of 8.6 percent for the Topix.
Investors “want to get the highest returns possible. I understand that,” said Inamori, talking about shareholders in general. He says the KDDI holding pays good dividends and serves as a buffer against hard times. “At times, company management has to say no to shareholders’ selfish requests.”
Seth Fischer, chief investment officer at Oasis, says this is an outmoded way of thinking. His fund is part of an influx of activists encouraged by Japan’s efforts under Abe to make firms more accountable to stockholders.
Not selfish
“WE are shareholders, not ‘selfish’ shareholders,” Fischer said by e-mail. “The view that management has a duty to protect the business from shareholders is exactly the behavior that Abenomics is designed to change.”
When Inamori talks about making employees happy, he doesn’t mean they’ll be putting their feet up. His brand of happiness comes from working harder than anyone else. It’s infused with the Buddhist idea of “shojin,” elevating the soul through devotion to a task. In a 2004 book on his philosophy, he questioned Japanese people’s increasing tendency to value leisure time.
Inamori’s less-extreme capitalism is a product of Japanese society, which he says, is less willing to accept gaps between haves and have-nots than western economies. Executives have to take that into account, he said.
“Companies do belong to shareholders, but hundreds or thousands of employees are also involved,” Inamori said. “The hen has to be healthy.”

Security Tips for Small Businesses
Operating a small business is a difficult endeavor. Keeping that business safe can be even more challenging. There are two main areas of concern that need to be monitored in order to ensure that a business remains secure. The first is protecting the physical assets of the business. The second is assuring that computer technology and use of the internet by the business is always done securely. In short, two questions arise:
Thoughmany businesses now function purely online, the small business still survives within the world of sweat, blood, and tears. Protecting these establishments is important. Inside the storefrontis property to be sold, liquid assets, financial data, and other information that could harm the business if it got into the wrong hands. The first question you must ask yourself when securing your small business is:What have I done to protect my storefront from burglars? What more can I do?
Here a few suggestions to help you determine if your physical assets are truly protected. Do these few things, and you will increase the safety of your business:
Computers and the Internet: Creating and Protecting an Internet Entity
Marketing for a small business benefits from e-mail and social media. Costs are reduced when computer technology is used to automate parts of the business. There are many benefits to owning an online business or at least bringing your traditional business to the virtual market. Here you can transform your business into a living, breathing internet entity. It will speak in tweets and likes, move money from one account to another before you can blink your eyes, and make your life a whole lot easier.
But if you fail to keep this child safe, then, like any parent, you’re going to be dealing with a sick child. And that’s always miserable.
Luckily, there are many ways to protect your virtual assets just as you have protected your physical ones. Follow these directions, and you’ll be one step closer to securing your small business:
There are many ways to protect your small business in addition to those listed here. Accessing the FCC’s “Ten Cybersecurity Tips for Small Businesses” is a worthwhile place to consider analyzing further options, but if you take into consideration both your storefront and internet presence, then you are in a good position. Follow these tips, and you will be safe. But always remember: stay up-to-date and be smart.

Here a few suggestions to help you determine if your physical assets are truly protected. Do these few things, and you will increase the safety of your business:
- Install a security system. Place cameras along the perimeter and interior of the building, and place a well-lit sign near the front door, ensuring visitors that the building is protected and that they are safe.
- Replace the locks as soon as the building is purchased. You don’t know how many copies of those keys the former owner made and to whom he gave them. Install new locks as part of the new security system for added benefits.
- Minimize liquid assets being kept within the store. If money is procured in a single day, take it to the bank immediately if possible. If this is not possible, it should be stored in a safe in which only a few people have access. If there was not a safe installed into the building when it was purchased, you should consider purchasing one now.
- Shred and burn all financial documents. As soon as financial data has been used, shred it. Then, at a scheduled time, burn all of the shredded paper. Leave no trace of your information in any form ever.

| So you need to ask yourself:How does the company protect important business information on its own systems and when shared on the internet? How is virtual data protected? |
- Use 2-step verification for accessing company computers. This requires a traditional password be entered into the computer followed by a second mode of verification. Google’s 2-Step Verification gives you two options. You can receive a code through text or phone call to be entered into the system, or you can use a security key that plugs into the USB port of the computer.
- Join InfraGard. InfraGard is a partnership between private institutions and the FBI.Institutions that participate are given opportunities to attend regular meetings in which local FBI agents address cyber-threats and mitigation techniques. This allows small businesses to stay up-to-date with modern cybersecurity techniques and become familiar with local agents who are valuable assets in securing your small business and its assets, both physical and virtual.
- Secure your network from intrusion. Encrypt your wireless data using a WPA2+AES encryption standard. Become knowledgeable about what different standards are available to you by reading from the experts at HowtoGeek.
- Use a virtual private network to encrypt your data after it leaves your wireless networkand enters the unsecure networks of the world wide web. A virtual private network is essentially a tunnel into the internet in which your small business can roam invisibly to hackers and other cyberthreats. By linking to a third party server, none of your private information is ever revealed.

Industrial Guarantee & Loan Fund lends to SMEs
Loans released by the Industrial Guarantee and Loan Fund (IGLF) rose to Php3.27 billion in 2014, 36-percent higher than in 2013. Medium to long-term and short-term loans, at Php2.58 billion, constituted 77 percent of net loans and manifested the largest growth rate of over 1,000 percent.
These loans were targeted at SMEs in the countryside seeking to fund working capital and capital expenditure requirements. IGLF had direct benefit on SMEs involved in transport services, trading, agribusiness, health care, food manufacturing and construction.
IGLF also took steps to further sharpen the focus of the program by increasing the asset size of enterprises eligible to Php200 million to further increase market cover and to address financing needs of industries with high value linkages and those with high employment generation potential, consistent with the national government’s mandate of inclusive growth.
The IGLF, likewise, ramped up its support to the Credit Surety Fund (CSF) of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, assisting in 30 CSFs so that the cooperative SME members can secure loans despite the inadequacy of their collateral position.
By the end of 2014, IGLF had program contributions of Php72.13 million to these CSFs, with the following new entrants: Bataan Credit Surety Fund, Quezon City Credit Surety Fund, Marikina Credit Surety Fund, Agusan del Norte Credit Surety Fund, Butuan Credit Surety Fund, San Jose City Credit Surety Fund, Science City Credit Surety Fund, and Nueva Vizcaya Credit Surety Fund.
IGLF ended 2014 with Php104 million in net income. It has also paid out almost all of its foreign obligations to the World Bank and with only the Asian Development Bank having a remaining balance of Php392.7 million. The initial government original investment in IGLF has grown from only Php803 million to Php6.3 billion today.
Throughout its 62 years of existence, the IGLF has been the longest-running lending facility of the government, with sustainability assured by the Development Bank of the Philippines, which served as its program manager since 1990.

Winning financial formula for everyone
![]() |
Every one is designed to win, wants to win and end up being a winner. Financial problems have simple solutions but that doesn’t mean it is an easy battle. Living your life should be exciting but sometimes you got knock down. With the right amount of knowledge, skills, and attitude you will be back on track.
1. Get a financial coach
In a generation that is full of information it is easy to get distracted. You badly need insights from someone who can understand and willing to work with you in order to improve your behavior so you can reach your goals. The end goal of a coach is to simply improve the clients performance in making sound financial decision. The client will be held accountable for the results of their financial health. Whenever you watch Weight watchers and Biggest Loser, those reality shows have been successful because of a lot of grind in the process and change in mental state of the contestants. After the coaching sessions you are expected to win long term not just for a couple of weeks because the coach was able to empower you with knowledge and equip you will great tools in making your dreams come true.
2. Manage your cash flow or budget
If you do this everyday or every week am sure you will win long term. By monitoring your behavior and making some action plans after you see the evaluation of your spending pattern it will help you to move forward. Many people are stuck and don’t know what to do with the money they earn, they thought saving some portions of it is the end of the story. What they don’t get is they also NEED to manage the expenses. When you let the expenses overtake your earnings sooner or later you will be in slavery mode (Debt). But if you let that money be in its proper place you are in a good hands. Treat your money like a soldier, if you will place all of them in a war against your old habits (enemy) you will lose a lot of them.
3. Get an Insurance that suits your needs
Many people still don’t see the value of insurance. In a country that most of the people are hardworking but have a poor financial literacy program it is really sad that they can’t see this as a goldmine. You need to get an insurance to secure the needs of the people that you love. If you don’t have a love one then don’t get it. Every body is going to die and you need to prepare for it. I recommend you to think long term and know your value. If you are worth 10 million today then get a 10 million or more coverage. Don’t just get one, ask from your insurance agents the things that you need to know or else they might not open up.
4. Write your will
Imagine that you have an establish career, your cash flow is good, you got an insurance and thriving investment together with a happy family but what will happen if you leave the Earth without a will?
If you don’t have a written will and you have so much assets that you have when you die, a complete stranger will decide how to split the estate under your name and your love ones like your children will suffer because of that. You are the one to blame if you will mismanage it. Talk to Registered Financial Planners for more info about this.
5. Revisit your career plan
Planning still the best way to prepare for the worst. Every year should be an exciting year. When mediocrity strikes you then you are setting yourself for less. . Domino effect will happen and you will end up unproductive. Your employer won’t think twice to kick you once your performance drop to the lowest level. Business is business and it will be better to let go of you.
The advantage having a career plan is you got a road map on how to climb up that mountain of road blocks ahead of you. Career choice starts within you not from your boss. You need to write down your skills set that will match to the next job that you have. Pray for divine intervention everyday because it will be a tough decision. You either might resign and look for the job that you really want or stay within the same company but look for a higher position. Changing your career will also have an effect with your cash flow so you need to think and weigh in things for you to grow.
6. Have a business.
Being an entrepreneur needs a lot of commitment. But if you are dedicated to grow more with mistakes and not regrets having a business is a gateway to your success. Grinding and pounding to your next sale will help you get out from living from paycheck to paycheck. Everyone is not cut to be an entrepreneur but you need to think like one. You have crazy abilities. Know yourself and grow it.
I noticed that all billionaires are businessmen who started from ground zero. With your effort, passion multiply it with a really good attitude will help you go on a long way.
7. Build your retirement plan
Study shows that more people once they retire from work are expecting a lot from Social security but according to the statistics, GSIS and SSS cannot sustain the lifestyle that you want. Now, if you want to live comfortably try to make a better choice. Build it brick by brick thru putting your extra funds in a good pool fund or put it in a stock market with a combination of peso cost averaging multiply it with discipline your money will grow exponentially.
Our economy is growing plus the pooled funds are doing really well. If you start with 5000 and every month you keep putting the same amount. Historically the equity funds can give minimum of 12% annually. When you do this for the next 30 years you will accumulate 8,258,577.94 regardless of the currency. With the compounding effect PLUS with time and value of money this will roll over and I think you can already live with a retirement in a decent way.

Free Envelope Budgeting System
We've all heard the financial gurus tell you about the benefits of cash. From Suze Orman to Dave Ramsey, cash is considered king whenever you are trying to control your budget. Each person explains a proprietary system to do this. I want to give you a cash management system for free.
I love to use cash because there is no late payments or interest. Its finite (which can be a double edged sword) and you can physically see how much is left in your personal budget. It pains me to break a 100 for a 35 dollar transaction. Since it is normal for humans to avoid pain, I tend to really think hard about breaking large bills for transactions.
Lets first debunk some common issues why people do not use cash. Whenever I think about it, it really boils down to two main issues against the use of cash.
Cash is unsafe, or I need a credit card for something something.
Lets discuss "Cash is unsafe". You may hear this rephrased as: "Cash can be stolen, lost, you can be mugged, etc..."
This is true. You can be mugged, cash be lost, a wallet stolen. Also a meteor. could crash on your head. I'm not denying that this cannot happen, but basic common sense can prevent many of these issues; however, let me tell you this. If you lose your cash, you can be out a couple hundred dollars (if you decide to carry that much).
But what is worse? Losing a couple bucks or Identity Theft? If you didn't know. The average amount lost because of Identity theft is $5,000. Not to mention the months it takes to fight collectors and to repair your credit. Yes, cash has risks, but compared to the cost of Identity theft, its a drop in the bucket.
The second most common excuse not to use cash is that you need a credit card for:
- Car rentals
- Credit rating
- Online Transactions
- Security (which deals with Identity Theft)
- Ease
- Online tracking of spending.
- Other reasons.
Unlike some people. I don't believe in getting rid of all credit cards. I have two I use and 2 I keep open just for credit ratings. I budget out what I plan to spend and if that needs a credit card. I automatically set aside in cash that money, so when I do swipe the card, I can pay it in full. This works well when coupled with a good rewards card.
Enough being a cash apologetic. Lets talk about the system:
The CIK System (Cash Is King):
In our checking account we have a 100 dollar buffer, money to cover the months bills and fuel cost (my wife doesn't like paying cash at the gas station), and we deposit from our cash pile (more like a mole hill) whenever I use the credit card. The rest of our expenses is withdrawn once a week in cash at the ATM, and that is what we use for the week. This allows us to keep on budget while not having to give up our auto bill pay. We place the cash in envelopes with the budget category on the outside and amount on the outside (we use Dave Ramsey's envelope system for this). Just like a check register, we record transactions. Once the money is gone, its done. No running to the ATM or swiping a card. In the rare event that we don't have enough cash to pay for something (like at a restaurant) we swipe then afterwards deposit the cash ASAP.
Doing this method my wife and I save $300 dollars a month and here is how we did it in nine steps:
- Total all the money you spend in a month.
- Subtract all bills that are deducted automatically or could be paid with Auto Bill Pay.
- Once you have the total divide it by 4 (4 weeks in a month).
- KEY PART: Take the weekly total and subtract 10%. Round down to the next smallest domination your ATM will issue*.
- Distribute cash to envelopes.
- Repeat once a week.
- Every month try to increase the 10% in increments of 5. I managed to get my family to 20%. You can almost make this a game. Adjust as needed, but always aim for at least 10%.
- Your checking account should have a $100 dollar buffer*, money to cover fuel cost if you do not want to use cash, and money to cover your bills.
