It's a colonial ritual to carry a briefcase on the budget day. This is probably the most notable throwback of the entire practice of budget - the word 'budget is derived from the Middle English word 'bowgette', which came from 'bougette' which means a leather bag in French. Earlier it was considered that a briefcase was sufficient enough to hold one's wealth. It's a tradition that is derived from the British. Carrying a red briefcase or "Budget box" before the budget presentation on the Budget Day is a ritual which has been practised since 1860.
The first budget presenter
The first budget presenter
In India, the tradition of the budget bag goes back to independent India's first ever budget presented by RK Shanmukham Chetty on November 26, 1947. The budget photograph shows Chetty, wearing a dark, pin-striped, three-piece suit, and carrying what looks like a leather portfolio bag. Ten years later, T T Krishnamachari poses with a slender file instead of the usual budget box.
However, there is no such tradition of passing the budget box is being followed in India.
Various Budget boxes
By the time the 1970s came along, the box went through a makeover, emerging as the classic hardtop, aluminium-rimmed 'attache case' so beloved of the decade.
Experiment with the briefcase
Later FMs too experimented with the form, if not the idea, of the budget bag. Yashwant Sinha's 1998-99 version had straps and buckles down the front while Manmohan Singh's epochal 1991version looked more or less like its Gladstone granddad but was black in colour.
Chidambaram's box
P Chidambaram used a plain brown and a reddish brown one in the Gladstone mould while Pranab Mukherjee held up a reddish box which looked almost like a replica of its British counterpart.
Story of the boxes
Arun Jaitley has picked a similar box for the two years he presented the budget though in different colours - one black and the other tan. According to sources, the budget bag is actually procured by the finance ministry.
The ministry offers the FM a choice of three or four bags out of which the FM picks one depending upon his choice of colour.

Great app in terms of user experience, with a very slick interface and all the necessary features makes this app the best indian stock market android apps.
A pretty straight forward app with necessary features like graphs, charts, Market stats, search function, News, My portfolio, Analyst corner, F&O, Derivatives. The app isn’t very good looking but packs all the standard features.
With these features this app ranks 3rd in Indian stock market android apps comparison list.
An android app by NSE itself, Does not pack all the standard features but has got some basic features like search, listing all information about equities, graphs, charts.
The unique feature it has got is , You can trade using this app, obviously it was possible since the app is published by NSE which is not available in any other app. But again you would not want to trade using a mobile app. I haven’t used that feature, and I’m highly doubtful trading via this app will ever find a large audience.
Thought it may not sport a lots of bells and whistles, but with the unique feature of trading via the app and the fact that the app is published by NSE, it should receive future upgrades and improvisations. This app makes 4th best indian stock market indian apps you can download from play store.
The last but not the least , 5th best indian stock market android apps in the play store today is the HDFC Securities app. This app by HDFC will help you track stock market and will also empower you to trade stocks from the app itself.
The next in our list is the Yahoo! Finance app, offering a broad range of financial coverage. Once you download the app, it will ask you to select the region/country so that you get all relevant quotes. It covers a vast range of indices, and almost all information, be it the price of a commodity or the latest finance-related news. The app offers daily market summary and news, tracks tickers that are important to you and lets you add or remove stocks from the watchlist. You can even view your Yahoo Finance profile from a PC. The UI neatly organises the stocks, and lets you track them by offering real-time and after-hours data. In fact, you can go beyond stocks as the app allows tracking industries, commodities and more.
The Investar app has been designed to view NSE stock charts. These charts show signals to help traders make buying/selling decisions using several technical indicators. It provides live quotes and charts for users. The intraday quotes and charts are auto-updated every five minutes. One can easily browse through daily and intraday stock charts to find stocks of interest and add it to watchlists. The free app allows adding up to three watchlists with a limit of 10 scrips per watchlist that come with five minute real-time updates for all NSE stocks. To create unlimited watchlists, one will have to make in-app purchases. The new Watchlist Synchronization allows users to keep a backup of their watchslists and/or synchronise them with the desktop software Investar 3.0.
The app looks colorful but do not pack any solid features to qualify as a full fledged and reliable stock market app. Ads placement at odd places in the app really hampers user experience and in long run may affect its usefulness.
I’d advise the publisher of this app to show ads less aggressively and focus on adding more detailed stats, features to match the top apps for indian stock market android apps.
A not so good app because it does not provides all the necessary features a stock market app should provide, rather provides the Market indices and and some pretty basic stuffs like search and stock graphs and charts. The apps asks for some subscription fees for more features, and this feature will make users switch to another free app.
Simply because when they get all the standard features + all the bells and whistles in the top apps that I’ve listed above they would never opt for paying any money for such features.
It’d be wise on the part of app publisher not to ask for any subscription fees for the features that aren’t premium since the popular free apps like ET Markets and Moneycontrol are already providing them for free of cost

In this post, we have compiled a list of top 5 movies on Stock Market. We have actually reviewed these movies and rated them from 1 to 5 (Number 1 is the best). The review is based on popularity, content and storyline. Check out for the list below and grab these DVD’s if you haven’t watched them already.
Number 5: The Big Short(2015)
This is a recent Oscar-nominated movie which has perfectly portrayed the reason for 2008 Stock Market crash. As a movie it has its own style. Something of a documentary, a comedy sometimes, but essentially a drama since the crisis cost 8 million people their job and their homes. It is the story of four extraordinary human beings in the world of finance, who predicted the 2008 market crash. These guys shorted the market while the entire world was long. They made huge amounts of money for their investors, all while the markets were tearing themselves apart. They felt horrible that the financial world had to collapse for them to be proven right, but they also acknowledged that the information was there for anyone to see. Watch it yourself to experience the fancy financial world. Few technical jargons would be difficult to comprehend if you are from non-financial background.
Number 4: Wall Street(1987)
Wall street is a story of a young and impatient stockbroker who is willing to do anything to get to the top, including trading on illegal inside information taken through a ruthless and greedy corporate raider. His name is Gordon Gekko, the name no doubt inspired by the lizard that feeds on insects and sheds its tail when trapped. With his diabolical charm, slicked-back hair, city-college chip on his shoulder, and era-defining “greed-is-good” mantra, Gordon Gekko may by one of the all-time great film roles. Michael Douglas’s performance as Gekko won a deserved Oscar in 1988 and makes “Wall Street” required viewing. The movie has a traditional plot structure: The hungry kid is impressed by the successful older man, seduced by him, betrayed by him, and then tries to turn the tables. The actual details of the plot are not so important as the changes we see in the characters.
Number 3: The Wolf ofWall Street(2013)
This is perhaps one of the most popular movies on Stock Market. Even a person from non-financial background can relate very easily to this movie. It’s based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. It recounts Belfort’s perspective on his career as a stockbroker in New York City and how his firm Stratton Oakmont engaged in rampant corruption and fraud on Wall Street that ultimately led to his downfall. Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese does a wonderful job keeping this movie at a high at all times. Never once does this movie lose its energy or sense of humor much like the drug induced characters.
Number 2: Margin Call(2011)
Margin Call is an outstanding thriller that revolves around the key people at an investment bank over a 24-hour period during the early stages of the financial crisis. When an entry-level analyst unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster. The performances are top notch. Everyone from Zachary Quinto to Demi Moore brings their A-game. Even supporting characters are oddly fleshed out for a film with such an ensemble cast. You don’t need to understand a lot about the markets to follow the film. One of the key characters, John, is a cool, polished Brit who likes to say things like, “Speak to me in plain terms,” because his job requires him to manage the corporation but not necessarily understand its business. Indeed, as we now know, a fresh young college graduate could have looked at the balance sheets and clearly seen Wall Street was doomed. This is indeed a must watch for all Stock market enthusiasts.
Number 1: Million Dollar Traders(2009)
Whether you are an amateur or professional trader, or even if you are aspiring to be a trader, this documentary series will leave you awestruck. This is a 3 episode series which depicts an experiment on eight ordinary people who are given a million dollars, a fortnight of intensive training and two months to run their own hedge fund. Can they make a killing? As the novices learn the dark art of trading stocks and shares, the financial markets start to buckle. Making money takes second place to basic survival as the brutal realities of global economics take their toll on the traders. This documentary matches the real experience of working in an actual trading environment. Demonstrates why trading is not for everyone. The traders develop in different ways, some crash unexpectedly and others are just great. The interactions of the traders and their reactions to the stress of having to perform makes this a compelling series. This is not about any investment fraud or financial crisis, rather it is about the real life experience of traders which would relate very closely to the people working in this field. No wonder, it’s a must watch and spots 1st position in our list.
Other notable movies on Stock Market which could not make into our list but are actually worth watching:
Boiler Room(2000)
Trading Places(1983)
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps(2010)
Rogue Trader(1999)
Floored(2009)
